BE-ing versus DO-ing
As part of my healing from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I have had to learn, really learn, the art of pacing. It involves becoming aware of how much I can do in a day, what kinds of things drain me, and how much rest is needed.
In a recent healing session, the practitioner suggested I practice BEing more than DOing. Now mind you, this isn’t my first time hearing this. But what was different this time was that I knew in my heart that this concept was the quickest path to healing. And, it is the path that will keep me healthy for years to come.
But what the heck does it mean to BE, and how can I do it? I asked a few friends for their thoughts.
One girlfriend told me it is about being mindful, disconnecting from the everyday grind, and spending time in the vastness of consciousness that comes with meditation.
I like that idea.
Another girlfriend told me she thought it had to do with self-awareness. She thought of BEing as a stance you take on when sitting with your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. It is a way of looking deeper into who you are.
Hmmm.. another great perspective.
In one of my morning journaling sessions, what popped in for me was this thought:
BEing is spending time with Yourself.
It was a light bulb moment, for sure.
Of course, we can break this down into many different tasks or activities, but I realized this is the part that makes it unique for each of us. We each have our own way of HOW we go about BEing.
For me, I am discovering it includes the following:
Detaching from electronics (the phone, the TV, the computer)
Listening to the sounds of nature (bees, birds, the wind through the trees)
Looking at flowers, plants, and trees
Smelling the air, especially around trees or dirt
Breathwork
Stretching my body
I am curious. What do you enjoy doing that allows you to BE more than DO?
